This Weeks Learning: January 5th - 9th

HAPPY NEW YEAR
BURR…winter has arrived with an arctic blast and it is FRIGID outside! However, prior to our holiday break Preschoolers welcomed the new season by wearing cozy pajamas and staying warm inside our classroom!

This week Preschool METEOROLOGISTS were introduced to a thermometer! When asked to observe this new “COOL TOOL” and share what they noticed, scholars responses included;
It has the letter H and C.
It is an old fashion clock.
I have one of those in my mudroom and behind my house.
It has a star and numbers on it.
It has a STOP sticker.

The thermometer will be utilized throughout the month of January to track daily temperatures. RED, BLUE and YELLOW stickers symbolize the following information;
  • RED sticker - DANGER… temperatures are too FRIGID to play outside
  • BLUE stickers - BUNDLE UP... it is FREEZING outside... 32 degrees
  • YELLOW stickers - HOTTER temperatures

Each day the STAR OF THE DAY will chart temperatures  on the graph below and we will tally results at the end of the month!
As we begin to study our winter weather here in Richmond VT, meteorologists have been paying close attention to our most common form of PRECIPITATION - snow!  We have learned many snowflake facts.  Did you know that all snowflakes have 6 points?  And that every snowflake is UNIQUE and looks different?

This week, preschoolers made their very own snowflakes by snipping coffee filters with scissors!  Scholars worked their strong finger muscles to fold the coffee filter in half, and then in half again.  While we were working on our project, scholars used their creative imaginations and transformed our coffee filters into many amazing things!
